PC To Phone Using (VoIP) With Dial-Up

August 30, 2009 · Posted in Vonage · Comment

Have you heard that you can make phone calls over the internet cheaply? Have you had a chance to try it? Most people that have had a chance to try it have experienced hit or miss quality, dropped calls as well as some speech delays. But there are some steps that you can take to really improve the quality and consistency of you VoIP calls over your internet Connection.

There is a lot of buzz these days around Internet based communication, VoIP, replacing regular/traditional telephone service. Much of the buzz has been created by/around a company called Vonage, who’s motto is “Leading the Internet Phone Revolution”.

Even if you do not have a broadband connection, you can still save a fortune by using VOIP service for long distance calls. A broadband connection will give you more consistent, reliable call quality, but similar results can be obtained using a dial up account if some guidelines are followed.

All VoIP service providers are different, they do not all support dial-up users. Companies such as Vonage happens to be one that backs away from dial up connections. The providers that do support dial up usually only support dial-up above certain speeds. The two most popular companies that do support dial up VoIP are Callserve and Go2Call.

If you close programs that are running in the background, you will get higher call quality. If you are using windows, just right click & close all open non-essential applications that are shown in your taskbar at the bottom right of your screen. If you are using windows XP & there are other users logged on, be sure they log off before trying to make a call.

You also need to be conscience of what you are doing while you are on the call. If you overload the limited data capability your call quality will suffer. Other activities that will compete for bandwith are: Instant Messaging, checking your email, web cameras, surfing the internet or downloading anything.

Scan your system frequently for Viruses and Adware, these programs can tie up your browser and internet connection, slow down your system and affect your call quality.

Make it a habit to scan your system every month so your virus software remains uo to date. McAfee or Nortons are good programs, Spybot – Search & Detroy is good for removing spyware.

Use a headset with a boom microphone and this should eliminate annoying voice echoes often associated with VoIP phone calls. If you use a headset, voice signals are limited in volume and thus the chances of your microphone ‘re-transmitting’ those voice signals is greatly reduced.

So if you have dial up you can still enjoy the cost savings of making PC to VoIP call.

VoIP Solutions: the New Age Telephony

August 30, 2009 · Posted in VoIP · Comment

Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP) is a more common term of ‘phone over the Internet’. If you have a reasonable quality Internet connection then you can get phone services delivered to your Internet connection. Before reaching the destination, the technology converts voice into regular telephonic signal. By using this service, you can directly make calls from your computer with the help of a special VoIP phone or a traditional phone connected to a special adapter. This function can either be included into the phone itself or in a separated box like a Analog Terminal Adapter(ATA).

Some people use VoIP solutions along with their traditional phone service, though VoIP solution providers usually offer lower rates than the traditional companies. Sometimes VoIP phone calls (even international) can be absolutely FREE. Several service providers are present who provide these type of “free” facilities. Examples are: ‘Free World Dial up’ and ‘Skype’. The service providers sometime permit to select an area code different from the area. On the other side, some VoIP providers do charge for a long distance call for outside calling area, just like the traditional wireless telephone service. And some VoIP solution providers permit you to call anywhere at a flat rate for a fixed number for a minute.

The VoIP-to-VoIP phone calls are sometimes free while VoIP calls connecting to Public Switching Telephone Network (VoIP-to-PSTN) may have an attached cost that is charged by the VoIP service provider.

There are three categories of VoIP service provider. These are, Single line resident/business plans service provider, B2B service provider-bulk organisational/terminal service provider (Business VoIP solutions) and RIP VoIP service provider.

You can use your computer while talking on the VoIP phone and some service provider offers service that can be used where a high speed Internet connection is not available. Using VoIP service in a new location may affect your ability to connect directly to emergency services. So, be ready to use the services of VoIP solutions but with due care.

You Need More Than Google to Generate Web Site Traffic Part 1

August 30, 2009 · Posted in Google Voice · Comment

Web site traffic is the amount of visits and visitors a site receives. This traffic is determined by the number of visitors and the number of pages they visit. Sites monitor the incoming and outgoing traffic to see which pages of their site are popular and if there are any apparent trends. Such trends include specific pages being viewed by people in a particular country. Web traffic is measured to see the popularity of Web sites and individual pages or sections within a site.

Your site traffic can be analyzed by viewing the statistics found in the Web server log file, or by using Web site traffic analysis programs. Any quality Web hosting company will provide free detailed statistics for site traffic. A hit is generated when any file is served. A page view is generated when a visitor requests any page within the site. A visitor will always generate at least one page view – the home or main page – but could generate many more while viewing your site. There are many ways you can increase your Web site traffic, and they all lead to greater sales and profit potentials. We will discuss a variety of options that lead to increased Web site traffic.

There are several things that you can do to promote your Website in addition to promotion through search engines. These may include the following:

Approach your local chamber of commerce and request that they write a short article about you and your business. Even if you are an online-only business, the local exposure is great. You can then take that article and publish it on your site as another promotional tool. Offer to speak at a seminar or lead a workshop in your area of expertise. This is a great way to gain positive media exposure that is community oriented, thus gaining you credibility and trust among potential clients. Circulate your URL at the seminar, and give away a digital report via an auto-responder e-mail. Put your Web site URL on everything you distribute like flyers, promotional items, business cards, and letterheads; Follow up any correspondence from the media with a letter or phone call. Make sure to leave your Web site URL on their voice mail. This strategy gains media exposure by building your reputation as a conscientious, courteous entrepreneur.

Share your knowledge by writing articles and professional opinions for online publications. You can then, upload them to automated e-zine syndication sites. These syndication sites are perfect for inserting immediate hotlinks back to your site and other specific landing pages. Remember to include your e-mail or picture in the byline as well as brief biographical information on yourself and your business. The more exposure you generate, the more successful your business will become.

How About Some Customer Service. Please!!

August 29, 2009 · Posted in Skype · Comment

Communication is one of the most important industries in the world. People have a need to talk, to get in touch with their friends and family, no matter where they are in the world. We started with letters sent with any individual traveling in that direction, which progressed to the postal system. With the advent of the Internet, we exchanged snail mail for email and later instant messengers

Somehow though, it just wasn’t enough. We needed to hear their voices not just read their words. With the help of great inventors, we progressed from the telephone to cellular phone to again utilizing the Internet to make calls.

Skype has been among the pioneers of this system. Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP as they call it, has been instrumental in bridging the distances between people. It means a lot to people to be able to actually greet their special someone happy birthday on that very special day without the exorbitant costs that land line or mobile telecommunications company charge per call.

Skype has been a wonderful service, much appreciated and enjoyed by everyone who prefers voice chat to email or messages. It is easy to use: simply download, sign up, tell your friends to do the same and you can talk with each other for free! Who could ask for more?

Skype, apparently though has become a little ambitious. After they were bought by Ebay, things seem to have begun to slide downhill. They’ve announced new paid services such as SkypeOut and SkypeIn. They are great ideas, for sure. This is why some of the Skype users who have been very happy with the free service agreed to pay the premium.

Unfortunately, while they may be expanding their products’ abilities to get new users, they have forgotten to take care of their existing subscribers. The service has deteriorated since I first signed up. Unfortunately, Skype doesn’t seem to care.

Since I didn’t want to kick up a fuss if there was a way for me to fix the problem myself, I checked out the Sykes home page again. I was happy to see that they had a help page with a trouble shooting guide. Unfortunately, even after following the various instructions and suggestions- it still wasn’t working properly.

Usually when that happens, I call the company to ask for further assistance. So I looked for a phone number where I could reach Skype’s customer service. I searched all over the page and didn’t find any number that I could call. The link marked “Contact Us” lead to a page that basically said before contacting them, I should read the help pages. No problem I had done that.

It now said that if I didn’t find the answer in their knowledge base I should contact their customer support. I now clicked on the link for that and ended up at an online ticketing system for complaints. Now, I’m glad they are taking down the complaints in black and white, and I do appreciate that it seems to be on a first in, first out basis. What upsets me is that absolutely nothing seems to be happening.

I told them how I was having some trouble with the service. I mentioned how more frequently it happens that the people I call can hear me but I can’t hear them in the middle of our conversation. I asked if they could please give me feedback on how to resolve the problem. After I filled out their form, I got their infamous acceptance message saying, “If your inquiry requires a response, we will get back to you within three days”. What the?! I thought every customer deserved to get a response, even if it’s just to get pointed to the right part of the forum!

Skype is so busy building up their new communication products that they’ve stopped communicating with their existing clients. They have obviously forgotten that great customer service is what will keep the numbers in their database up. If people don’t get the assistance they need, they will leave; especially now that the service of the product itself is deteriorating.

Are they now so big that they can’t be talked with? Is it too much to ask that they put in a few more people to take care of answering the support requests? Or have they already spread themselves so thin that they can’t afford to hire more people? No wonder the service is beginning to suck.

I truly don’t appreciate how impersonally Skype is handling customer service. I pay for SkypeOut, I got billed but to date, it still isn’t working properly. I sent Skype both a support request (from their site) and an email, to the email address of their billing team (the address of which by the way I did not find on their website but through searching the web for other Skype complaints). I still have no action from them. Talk about wasted money!

What amazes me is that Skype doesn’t even have “live chat” or some other similar help desk program so that we customers with concerns and who want to continue using Skype can talk with someone in Sykes who can help. Considering that Sykes is a communication company, I’d have thought that they would create one themselves. That little software for customer service is an absolute treasure!

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, after all the site is obviously geared to attracting new users only. Skype seems to be interested in just making more and more money; and bringing in more users. They obviously don’t care if their subscribers leave because they get no assistance and maintenance services from them.

Cardinal rule of any business, Skype, is to take care of your customers. Your repeat business usually in the long run can make you more money than new subscribers will. It would do your business a lot of good if you would pay attention to your subscribers and give them their money’s worth. I know I’m disappointed in the service…..

Femtocells Market Assessment | Femtocell Market Forecasts | Femtocells Market

Femtocell Market Shares Strategies, and Forecasts, 2008 to 2014

Femtocell systems provide modular value added services delivery of wireless communications and SIP based push technology presence implementing flexibility for people. The femtocells are designed for achieving automation of communications connectivity around the home and office. Adoption of advanced systems is anticipated to be rapid.

Femtocells, are they a secret gathering of female revolutionaries or a miniature mobile phone base station? Probably the latter, but it is intriguing to think about the former. Lets see, oh well, femtocell technology is an industry-changing innovation. Dual-mode WiFi/cellular phones are not nearly as cost effective as femtocells. Femtocells are emerging as the main technologies that will link the indoor and outdoor networks. Femtocells are particularly attractive to mobile carriers.

Femtocells are emerging as a technology that lets wireless phone use in homes and offices become a viable alternative to landline telephones. The ability to leverage the Internet makes femtocells an economic force in the marketplace; it brings the industry changes in the way voice is delivered.

Femtocells support SIP based broadband applications. Femtocells will most likely work in a telecommunications environment that has multiple co-existing technologies that are deployed by different carriers to address their specific customer bases, business models, and eco-systems.

IP Multimedia subsystems promise to play a significant role in the core network evolution. The consumer always prefers achieving control over the network as much a s possible. The core backbone infrastructure is provided by the services providers, but the edge of the network is evolving functionality. Femtocells provide a way for consumers to go to the local store and purchase a device that optimizes the existing 3G handset ability to have better access to NGN IP services.

This aspect of optimizing packet services from the home gives the consumer better control. No one will defer to the service provider if they can go out and purchase their own device for somewhere between $300 and $100 as the volumes increase and the prices decline. Service providers may think that they can control the access to the devices, but in competitive markets, the customer will always choose control over his own environment vs. giving the services provider control over the network.

Femtocells improve the quality of service of 3G networks indoors. Even 2G and 2.5G coverage can be patchy. Mobile users can enjoy voice and data services from home. One barrier to rollout is the need to reduce the cost per unit of the hardware. Initially it may be that operators provide femtocells to customers as part of a service plan.

Carriers have realized that it would be three years before the cost of the femtocell will reach $100. They are now considering renting out femtocells to users for a long contract period, rather than allowing them to buy it outright.

Cisco has interest in the emerging technology with an investment in ip.access, a Cambridge-based femtocell manufacturer. This is opening up the possibility of femtocells being integrated into other consumer entertainment hardware, such as set-top boxes, which Cisco already sells. Because femtocells provide a way for mobile operators to handle backhaul, calls would go from the handset, to the femtocell, down the broadband connection, back onto the cellular network. This beats having to set up lots more base stations.

Ubiquisys, the Google-backed company is providing the femtocells for O2, along with 12 other trials around the world. It provide a technology that listens in to the existing GSM and 3G network signals to establish if the licensee is allowed to transmit here. This provides the advantage of allowing network operators to lock the femtocell to one physical location or more, for a small fee.

Femtocells provide cheap calls, but with the cost of calling so low there has been a clear shift to data, with O2 citing the iPhone as a clear driver: Apple iPhone is already driving unheard-of levels of mobile internet usage, and the introduction of flat rate data tariffs is expected to increase this further.

Ironically, the iPhone does not work with the femtocells O2 is deploying as they are 3G-only devices O2 is looking ahead to the next generation handset from Apple. O2 uses femtocells to drive uptake of their broadband offering. Network operators can deploy the technology on cable or ADSL broadband connections. O2’s DVB-H trials show that half mobile-TV viewing is done in the home, so a large-scale femtocell deployment provides them with the opportunity to become a major provider of video to the home.

Google has said it plans to bid in a planned auction of wireless airwaves. It could use femtocell technology to quickly roll out wireless services in the U.S. By deploying a femtocell-like system, in a matter of a year they might be able to reach more than 50% of the U.S. population. Google can deploy femtocells at malls, on city streets (by mounting femtocells on street lamps), and along major highways. Then it might strike roaming agreements with other carriers to offer users wireless service outside the home while it builds out its wireless towers.

If Google set up the wireless telephone business, they could offer communications free, basing the revenue model on advertising. If calls go out ot he Internet throught the femtocell, they could be handled in the same way that Google Talk works not, and there would be no need for a wireless services provider.

Services providers cannot service devices in the home the cost of truck tolls is too high. Just as Verizon started out offering routers to the home owner for fiber services, those devices were not supported and customers are told to go to the local store and purchase a router.

Femtocell trials are achieving success. Rolling out a femtocell-based service is dependent on building an end-user initiative that would create demand for a femtocell. Improved indoor coverage can be delivered by repeaters or additional macro-cell base stations. Improved capacity would follow. Femtocells create the need for subscribers to purchase home based devices. The value in FMC services comes when strong 3G users need more capacity to transmit to the internet from inside the home or office.

Markets initially at $434 million in 2009 reach $9 billion by 2014. The rapid growth occurs because to the large size of the wireless handset markets, the billions of subscribes that must be supported. The femtocells provide core infrastructure at a lower price than other alternatives. The local home base station gives the consumer a measure of control over the network that is useful.

Managed VoIP Service: Enjoy Best of Services

August 26, 2009 · Posted in PSTN · Comment

The advanced internet telephony services deliver various benefits ranging from improved organizational productivity and mobility to streamlined infrastructure and reduced operating costs. With these benefits, many business enterprises especially with the global presence are opting for voice over IP services(VoIP) to meet their communication needs. The main motive of managed VoIP service is to provide business enterprises with the necessary skills and expertise to assure that voice quality meets or exceeds expectations.

Successful migration to IP based services require technical resources with an understanding of voice, data and unique characteristics of running voice as an application on a data network. Therefore, it can be said that these skills are in high demand, while moving to these services.

The voice quality of these services are somewhat closer or better than traditional PSTN telephone quality. As a matter of fact, one can easily measure the voice quality features, if reporting and diagnostic capabilities for quality of service (QoS) as well as quality of experience (QoE) are categorised into the VoIP network design. A network-management strategy focuses on voice quality. It includes real-time monitoring of voice-quality issues at the infrastructure level such as jitter, latency and packet loss. These issues are considered, if there is a process in place to turn data into diagnostic and remedial action. A fully managed solution offers advantages such as:

1.Low capital expenditures: The business entities do not need to spend on the features and functions of an IP PBX and other associated equipment, as they are delivered over the network. As a matter of fact, providers of the managed partitioning services offer infrastructural support in terms of equipment, VoIP switch, VoIP gateway, software NOC and many more. The organizations can keep a track of their capital expenditure, quite easily.
2.Predictable operating cost: Fully etwork switch partitioning services are based on the monthly voice and data charges.
3.Low maintenance costs: A technical provider of network switch partitioning service takes care of all the details involved with the upkeep of the equipment.
4.VoIP network performance: Unlike PSTN services, VoIP services offer benefits such as improved service quality, security, reliability, business continuity and disaster recovery over on equipment.
5.Scalability: These solutions are more flexible than premise equipment, when compared to cost-effectively scaling.
6.Productivity improvements: A fully managed VoIP solution adds advantages such as availability of customized and Web portal-based communication management applications.

To conclude, before opting for these managed internet telephony services, one has to take care of various things such as knowing of technical skills, minimizing transition risks, managing costs as well as assuring superb voice quality.

Branding Your Website To Improve Sales And Retention

August 24, 2009 · Posted in Google Voice · Comment

Branding has long been a viable and sustainable marketing method for big businesses offline. Website owners and online service providers can do their business venture a lot of favors by following suit. A well branded website becomes synonymous with a particular service – for example when we think of search engines we think of Google and when we think of auctions we think of Ebay. By branding your website you could enjoy the same benefits of cornering a particular niche.

Image Is Everything

A website design needs to look good, but it should also embody your website’s ethos. Product and company branding is about increasing brand awareness. In order to help facilitate this, it is important that the logo, website design, banner design, and other creative design aspects of your online venture match one another and embody the brand you are promoting.

A well branded design needs to be memorable and it should represent the type of service or product you are selling. By essentially bombarding your visitors with your brand you can ensure that, over time, your brand is the one that they think of when looking for the product or service that you provide. Brand your emails, logo, website design and everything else towards this end.

Voice

A big part of your website brand is the voice that you use. You need to be able to encourage your visitors to purchase from you, and to trust you. In order to do that, it is essential that you offer them a reason to trust you. The voice of the text on your website plays a major part in this trust building relationship. Be informative, and be knowledgeable – offer help where it’s appropriate and give visitors a reason to want to trust you.

Getting Noticed

The best branding in the world is only effective when it’s seen. Once you have the elements of your brand completed, including design and voice, you need to get a good amount of brand exposure. Online advertising comes in many forms, and each have their advantages and disadvantages. When advertising for the sake of branding, it’s important to be seen by as many targeted leads as possible.

Viral marketing is far from being a new phenomenon but the improvement in streaming video technology and Internet speeds means that there are more ways to implement a viral marketing campaign. The popularity of sites like YouTube and Google Video has paved the way for web businesses to employ a cost effective form of viral marketing.

Taking It Offline

Most online businesses have some core areas of their work that are conducted offline. Invoices and shipping labels can all be branded to match your website, as well as any form of written communication. You might also consider taking part in trade fairs and local industry based exhibitions to increase brand awareness.

Website Branding To Improve Sales

Website branding doesn’t need to be expensive to be effective. Logos, website design, and creative design do come at a price but by ensuring that they all follow your website’s branding design, and offering an authoritative and helpful voice, you can increase sales and improve your customer retention rates.

How to make the most of Skype – Part 1

August 22, 2009 · Posted in Skype · Comment

Skype is rapidly becoming one of the better known communication programs on the market. It has a free and paid for service available to users who download the software. The free service includes;

Free peer to peer communication through I.M., Voice and webcam with other users that have the skype software. File sharing and video conferencing are also available. All calls are protected with strong encryption algorithms for the user’s privacy and security.

Skype’s paid service goes a lot further than many of the VoIP services on the market. Using a number of secure payment options, including credit card and paypal, call credits can be bought online and used to ring any number in the world for a very cheap rate. For example, using Skype from a computer in Ireland to ring a cell phone in the U.S.A. costs no more than 2 cents a minute, at any time. The quality of this service is generally crystal clear and without as many problems noticed on other peer to peer programs.

In January 2007 Skype launched a prepaid unlimited call service for U.S. customers, meaning that for a once off fee customers in America could contact any other number within the U.S. at no extra cost.

SkypeIn is another service that allows users to receive calls on their computers through a specially provided number. The number is “bought” cheaply from skype and the cost of someone ringing the number is generally only the cost of a local call. This service is available in Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the United States.

Skype also provides Voicemail, text chat – with a connection to IRC, videoconferencing, Skypecasts – live conversations on selected topics with other users, SMS – the ability to contact cell phones through sms messages at a cheap rate and a Skype toolbar that allows skype to interface with your webpage and replace phone numbers on WebPages with a clickable icon.

A skype phone directory and software for blackberries and other PDAs is currently being rolled out.

While Skype is far from problem free, this is one of the better peer to peer programs i have seen, and saves me a lot of money on transatlantic calls.

Skype doesn’t function everywhere however due to political problems. India are trying to crack down on such programs to counteract the loss of revenue, The U.A.E have blocked all use of the skype program – believed to be for economic reasons as well. China is also believed to have ordered the blockage of skype in some of its regions.

Overall, this is a highly recommended peer to peer program that, if you are calling long distance on a regular basis, will save you a lot of money.

Discover VoIP And Enjoy The New Way Of Communication

August 21, 2009 · Posted in PSTN · Comment

You’ve probably heard about VoIP technology or Internet telephony. Voice Over Internet Protocol is a new form of communication that enables you to telephone through the Internet for free or at a very low price.

Developers and entrepreneurs have created an industry around VoIP technology in its many forms: desktop applications, telephone services, and corporate phone systems. VoIP is an essential technology that have many aspects.

It seems that many communications firm foresaw the magnificence of VoIP technology, because by this time it is extremely widespread. VoIP is one the world’s fastest growing industries. It almost covers the whole world.

In the last few years we could see a complete revolution in communication world: everybody begins to use PCs and Internet for job and free time to communicate each other and sometimes to talk each other.

VoIP can send voice over the Internet, rather than through the regular telephone network. The point is that analog voice is converted into digital signals (bits) and then backwards. It allows you to make and receive phone calls to practically any number worldwide including landlines, mobiles, international numbers etc.

To the businessman, VoIP is a single technology investment with many revenue streams. To the enterprise network engineer, it’s a way to simplify the corporate network and improve the telephony experience for users of the network. For you, it’s the best way to save money on the terrible phone bill.

And this is what makes VoIP so revolutionary. The big deal is that you can save great amounts on your phone bill, especially if you frequently make calls abroad.

When you are using PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) line, you always pay for time used to a PSTN line manager company: more time you stay at phone and more you’ll pay. In addition you can’t talk with more people at the same time.

But with VoIP technology, you can talk all the time with as many people as you want (the needed is that other person is also connected to Internet at the same time, like here http://www.peneo.com), and as far as you want. What’s more, you can share data with your partners. You can send images, documents and videos while you’re talking. If you run a business, the advantages and the money you can save multiply.

But then, why everybody doesn’t use it yet? Well, the only disadvantages are voice quality and call reliability compared to PSTN. VoIP applications require a real-time data streaming cause we expect an interactive data voice exchange. But this problem is solvable in the close future.
