Skype Phones: a Real Cool Service
In this era of scientific brilliance no one should be surprised on any unique invention. What is most admirable about these inventions and discoveries is the fact that all such things are aimed at benefiting people. There are numerous such examples where in science has thrown up products which have proved to be of immense use for mankind. Even things which are considered to be dangerous for human beings like nuclear energy or dynamite were also invented with the welfare of human beings at heart.
Dynamite was invented to remove hindrances like mountains etc. for development purposes. It was very unfortunate that people later started using it for ruining each other. Similar things happened with nuclear energy. It was developed with the intention of putting world on the fast track of success, unfortunately people started using it for destroying each other. However, no one can deny the fact that science has indeed thrown up, from time to time, products which had the potential of unleashing a range of development activities. The latest in the list is Skype phones.
A superior telephone service, it has literally given the other telephone services a run for their money and entrenched itself at the helm with the very best. Needless to say that Skype phones are extremely popular amongst the masses. One of the major reasons behind the huge popularity that Skype phones enjoy is the fact that it allows call from a Skype phone to Skype phone absolutely free of cost. Though it must be added that a call from Skype phone to another service provider end up being charged as per minute basis.
The slash in the price range as well as the relay of voice signals was the clinching factor for Skype phone. As if this was not enough, the Skype phone users also get such benefits like cordless Skype phones, Skype headsets, USP Skype headsets, Skype adaptors, Wi-Fi phones and web cameras, which really makes Skype phones a cool prospect and give it a cutting edge over its rivals.
The Lowdown on Vonage
Many internet users have recognized that using the Net for voice communication is far cheaper than using the conventional telephone. Enter VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, which is used to carry voice signals over the IP network. Vonage is one of the several players in the category. Sprint, Verizon, BroadVoice and AOL are some of the other names synonymous with VoIP.
Vonage has carved out a niche for itself. It is known as “The Broadband Phone Company” that is “Leading the Internet Phone Revolution”. It prides itself in providing an all-inclusive phone service. The subscriber can make local and long distance calls anywhere in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico for one low price. Add to this that calls to some select European countries come free with its unlimited plans. Its aggressive consumer marketing in the US, Canada, UK and other countries globally has almost single handedly ushered in the era of VoBB (Voice over Broad Band) services.
As a VoBB service provider it gives its subscribers a whole lot of ‘must-haves’ and ‘add-ons’. Features like Keep Your Phone Number, Live Customer Support, Money-Back Guarantee, Great International Rates, Bandwidth Saver, Billing Information, etc. provide ease of use as well as economy to the user. Frequent referrals to the service make the service more economical for a user. Add-ons like adding multiple phone numbers to the user’s Vonage account, providing virtual phone numbers as secondary numbers, providing own toll free number and dedicated fax line service provide additional advantage to a frequent traveler. These facilities come with a small individual price tag but help the user to customize his service to suit his or her needs.
Vonage has an unlimited plan priced at $24.99. Up till now it was quite an unbeaten price. Recently another VoIP service provider, Verizon, had priced its unlimited plan a wee bit lower at $24.95. But most current subscribers to Vonage services are still content with the comprehensive package that the company has to offer. Basic 500 priced at $14.99, Small business unlimited at $49.99 and Small Business Basic at $39.99 are some of the other popular options that a user gets to choose from.
There are a few un-met expectations from the service, however. Though the ‘Keep your phone number’ feature is known to work well, some users have in the recent past complained about change of number problems. Apart from this some users feel that the service provider should add ‘anonymous call rejection’ and ‘do not disturb features’ as part of the service. Another common complaint is that though Vonage replies quite consistently via email, when the caller tries to access the customer care by phone he may have to be on hold for a longer duration than what may be generally acceptable. And lastly, some subscribers have experienced setup problems. But overall the general sentiment is that once Vonage is installed properly, it works well and saves money!

Look Mom, No Mouthstick
How would you like to have a fully functioning television and telephone built into your PC and be able to use both as well as many of your other computer programs using only voice commands? We have the technology.
I am a high level quad and have been a computer junkie since 1989 when I discovered that I could link up to other computers with a PC and a modem. Once I had downloaded my first file-a simple computer game-and ran it on my computer, I was hooked.
I have been operating my computers over the years using a mouthstick, and special software (now bundled with Windows in their accessibility options package) allows me to type keyboard combinations and operate the mouse all on a standard keyboard. I had always been reluctant to try voice recognition software because for one, the idea of dictating rather than typing was alien to me and two, I didn’t believe I would have the ease of use in using my other computer programs.
Recently, a rather bad decubitus on my derrire left me bedridden, and being unable to use a mouthstick in bed, it seemed that voice recognition software was my only option if I wanted to be able to use my computer.
I took the plunge and invested in a copy of Nuance’s Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I must admit I was amazed at the relative ease of transition from mouthstick to microphone. Not only could I dictate my voice while lying in bed, but I could also navigate through my computer and use programs almost as easily (and sometimes easier) as I could with my mouthstick. I was duly impressed.
Technologically speaking, PCs seem to go through their life spans quicker than fruit flies, and very recently it came time to retire my old PC for a new one, and it had an added punch: television. My new PC came with a TV tuner card and accompanying software installed that allows me to watch TV on my computer. With voice commands, I can turn it on and off, change channels, pause, instant replay and even record programs to my hard drive.
An added plus is that I can surf the net, check my e-mail and use other programs all while the TV is playing and all with voice commands. The sound of the TV doesn’t affect the voice-recognition, as I use a headset and the microphone doesn’t hear what comes through the headphones. And I can always mute the TV if I like.
Now for the telephone: Perhaps the most helpful tool on my computer is Vonage’s SoftPhone software and service. The only requirements are that one
