Thank goodness I purchased this at Best Buy as it is going BACK tomorrow! This gizmo does not work. Couldn’t recieve calls even after an hour and a half of “tinkering” with the folks on the Chat line. Tried multiple phones, and TWO computers.

I think perhaps this product is not quite ready for prime time. I went with the PC Magazine endorsement, which seems to have been a mistake this time… They might want to take a second look at the product.

The device works as advertised on one of my two computers but it does not work on a Dell laptop. I decided to see how bad the support really is – I was amazed. I wanted to see how long it would take before they could fix the problem. I thought they would give up before I would, but they might have won.

7 1/2 hours later, I’ve gotten nowhere. Their “chat” system is terrible. There is no way to talk to anyone, only “chat/typing”. So far they haven’t done a thing. I got lots of promises of upgrades, and they had me messing around with the registry, deleting drivers, doing all sorts of things that if done incorrectly could mess up a computer so badly that it would never boot again.

The problem is their drivers are poorly written – if it doesn’t work right away, good luck. I explained this to them, however it took 6 1/2 hours for them to finally agree. They continued to have me do the same things, over and over and over again – sometimes up to 16 times. I thought they would give up, but they never did.

I’ve had nice chats with people like Rizza, Marykate, Bert, Therese, Howard, and many others. All completely useless, but they tried their best at reading their scripts. Jeaniza was the worst – she was the only one who “hung up” on me because I asked for her supervisor. She said she was as high a manager as they have. I said it must be nice to own the company and she hung up. Nice…

You’ll have no trouble ordering, but their “customer service” is HORRIBLE. They deliberately drag things out, claim one thing and then the opposite, pass you to different representatives who then contradict what the other one told you, and they sometimes suddenly have trouble with English or typing, yet have no trouble at other times. They are very polite, yet totally ineffectual and unethical.

After reading Amazon reviews, I decided to cancel my order less than 1 hour after placing it. The first day, I wasted 3+ hours during 3 different “live chat sessions” with MagicJack’s customer service representatives, getting nowhere. They could process the order enough to gain pre-authorization from my credit card company (I checked), but couldn’t access the records to cancel my order and after wasting as much time as they could, would finally tell me to try again later. The next day, I tried again and STILL don’t know whether or not they cancelled my order. Here is the exact transcript of that half-hour interaction:

NOTE: I used * symbols to make notes to you the reader. And, I put *** on important comments.

Please wait for a site operator to respond.

You are now chatting with ‘Earl’

Them: *they typed my full name in all capital letters and bold, nothing else.

Me: And, I’m sending my credit card company a transcript of this conversation to make sure that they don’t pay your company one penny.

Them: 12/11/2008 [C]anceled Order Updated from EARL (*Note: Earl was the representative’s name)

I ordered this product a week ago. And I have already been charged twice.

They advertise that the first 30 days are suppose to be on a free trial. And yesterday I spent an hour chatting with a technical person, who lied to me about the product.I tried to cancel, thats when I got charged a second time. I was told yesterday that the item I ordered still has not even been shipped. So I reported my card as lost hoping to recoupe the money the Scammers have already charged me. Even if the product was legit, I would not want to do buisness with a dishonest company.

Initially I was skeptical about this product and thought to give it a try. We had been paying for 2 home phone lines one for internet and one for talking so our bills had been $120 a month. We then dropped one line and then went with Alltel broadband. We bought the magic jack and could not get it to register at all and the support person was great about it even though they could not solve it we eventually solved it on out own. We had to activate it with dial up and then it was able to work with Alltel. The problem was Alltel and their service was not fast enough. Alltel promised 3.1Mbps speed but we would be lucky during off peak times to reach 1 Mbps that so obviously it didn’t work as well as expected. It did work but would cut out at times since our speed was not constant. After a year with Alltel ….. Alltel called us to tell us we roam too much and they were letting us out of the contract because we were costing them too much. Keep in mind during that time we did not use the magic jack and were planning to send it overseas to relatives so they could call us as much as they wanted. But we procrastinated and didn’t get there. After Alltel dropped us we went with a new local company broadcasting Wi-fi and we now get guaranteed speeds of 3 Mbps speeds and the magic jack works perfectly. We tested it out while downloading and surfing before we decided to cancel our home phone long distance. It works fantastic and it may break a little if downloading huge files but it is still 100% better than cell phone usage breakup. We are now planning to buy another one to send over seas to relatives so they can call us as much as they want. As far as everything goes you have to make sure you have enough speed to get good clarity and now we have it, it works like a charm.
