why wont my vonage work when it is directly connected to my comcast modem?

whenever i connect my vonage directly to the comcast modem, the internet light on my vonage blinks and it says, the vonage device cannot connect to the internet. do i need to connect the comcast modem>wireless router>vonage?

    Try power cycling the cable modem. (Unplug it, count to 10, and then plug it back in.)
