I wanted to utilize Vonage as a cheap alternative for a second business line in my home. I was pleased with the quality of service, but I have to warn others about the terms of service. Apparently, when you sign-up you sign a contract and if you attempt to terminate early, you will be hit with cancellation fees (~$50 in my case). Probably my fault for not reading the fine print (and it’s really fine!), but just a caution for others.

Unless you spend three days sifting through the fine print, I suggest steering clear of Vonage. I decided to switch to Vonage because it was quite a bit cheaper than what I was paying through my previous carrier. I thought that it was worth a try. Bad idea. I hated having all of my phones right next to my computer (way to many wires)! It also had a little bit of an echo. I decided to switch back and woke up one morning to see that they had charged me [...] to pay for this device that I thought that I had already paid for and a disconnect fee on an agreement that I do not remember signing. I was on the phone all morning getting transferred from one person to another. Not a fun day…
Moral of this story: DO NOT TRY VONAGE UNLESS YOU KNOW YOU WILL BE WITH THEM FOR AT LEAST TWO YEARS.

The device worked just fine. However, audio quality of Vonage service suffered from time to time, especially when downloading files took up bandwidth. Upon cancellation, was hit with $114 in cancellation fees. Also, after cancelling, Vonage started calling me at work to ask me to try Vonage again.

Do not, do not, do not get Vonage service. I signed up for the “free” trial period with a “free” portal device. The sound quality was terrible, beyond terrible. I tried some of the troubleshooting to no avail. There would also be times where I would pick up the phone and it would be unuseable because of screeching static. So I disconnected the service. After 30 minutes on the phone, I ended up with nearly $100 in fees to disconnect this terrible service because I was disconnecting three days beyond the 30 day trial period. So keep track of your activation date because I can guarantee you’ll want to cancel the service, also track your minutes because they’ll charge you if you use more than 500 minutes in the trial period. Or just save yourself the hassle and don’t get this terrible service in the first place.

We decided to try Vonage as a less expensive alternative to our land line. The purchase process was straightforward, we recieved accurate information about porting our land line etc. We recieved the box, and plugged it in, nothing. I spent 4 hours ont he line with technical support and was told they would have to send someone out. No problem, next available appointment was 2 weeks away. Uh-oh.
Two weeks goes buy and I get a call that says they need a credit card to secure charges for the “free” technical visit. I call customer service, am on hold about 2 hours, and finally get that straightened out. In the meantime they run me thourhg all their technical support over the phone agian, another 2 hours watsed.
No one shows for the service call. It takes another hour on hold to get to someone who says the service company cancelled the appointment, sorry they did not call me. They would be happy to setup another service call, wait is now 6 weeks.
No thanks.
